B-13
I think in this country, this is called free running, but it was invented by David Belle in France and makes up a good protion of B13 (Banlieue 13 to give it its correct title, which translates to District 13 - not District B13 as some think). Written by the fantastic Luc Besson, creator of such phenomenons as The Fifth Element, Kiss of the Dragon and Arthur and the Invisibles (Minimoys) to name but a few, this is a tale of two men from opposite sides of the tracks - one, a cop and the other, a street-wise guy from the Parisien ghetto known as B13. In 2010, the ghetto areas of Paris are walled off and the worst of the B13 is ruled by a drug Lord - Taha. When Leito steals and destroys €1,000,000 worth of Taha's heroine, who retaliates by kidnapping Leito's sister, Lola. As a result, the corrupt police in the area jail Leito and six months later, he vows to bring them down.
Some have had the nerve to say that there isn't much of a plot to this, yet in reality, there is. The fact is, it doesn't seem to matter as the action is just so mind-boggling in places that I don't think you care why it's happening, just so long as it does. As a self-confessed fan of Luc Besson, I would tend to be somewhat slightly biased, however, it's not like that at all. The story's good, the plot is simple - for the most part - but strong and the acting is excellent. After a while, we didn't even care that it was in French with subtitles, it's just a white-knuckle ride from one end to the other. |
