Abby SciutoAbby Sciuto NCIS scientist, lives on Caf-Pow and loud music whilst getting to the bottom of just about all - even the weirdest - of the problems brought to her from the biological to the chemical and the mechanical to the technological - oh, and all while interacting on a familiar basis with her machines. Abby's not real though... Well Duh! 'She' was created by Donald Bellisario, but I would hazard a guess and say that she's mainly Pauley Perrette's creation. You get the distinct impression that she's completely comfortable in the guise of a Goth and why not? She looks good that way, but then she'd look good in anything. Her list of work is not short, doing everything from cartoons to cinema and TV, but I think NCIS is the thing that stands out in many people's minds. She worked for a while as a bartender in New York and did commercials and voice-over's before landing a recurring part in Special Unit 2 as the unit's public relation's officer, Alice Cramer. Then in 2003, she got the part of Abby in JAG, which led to NCIS. On top of these, she has also made appearances in season one of 24, the role of a waitress at Cafe Nervosa in season four of Frasier and films such as The Ring and Almost Famous to name but a few. But her talents don't stop there either. She is also a published poet, writer and songwriter with her compositions making it into Legally Blonde and The NCIS soundtrack. An NCIS forensic scientist? Not really much of a surprise, since Pauley has a life-long obsession with crime, starting a Masters Degree in forensics at Valdosta State University, so she’s eminently qualified to play the part. It's weird how she started out life as a university undergraduate studying the very science she portrays on the telly don't you think? Or is it Karma?
Goth queen? When someone carries a character like Abby so effortlessly, it becomes difficult to imagine her as anyone else and while, as I said before, her acting credits are by no means short, Abby seems to be the one that everyone gravitates to. Certainly if the internet is anything to go by, Abby Sciuto is possibly one of the most popular cosplay characters outside of anime. Good choice. However, for Pauley, Abby is just a character. She's not one who is eaten up; consumed by her on-screen persona. It may be disappointing to her fans that off the set of NCIS, she does not carry on as Abby, but returns to herself.
Abby Sciuto spider web tattooOn screen, Abby is an eccentric caffeine addict, fast-talking with an off-beat manner towards everyone, regardless of their position. She knows what she's talking about and without her, much of what the NCIS team have to prove, ascertain or otherwise get to the bottom of, wouldn't be possible without her. She's a dichotomy in that many goths are presented as morbid or at the very least, morose, yet Abby is neither, mostly smiling unless too much (or not enough) Caf-Pow has her wired - or should that be weird? Her dress code is a statement that says, "don't judge a book by its cover" as whilst her appearance is busy shouting one thing, her actions and abilities are busy screaming something totally different. Though her wardrobe drifts from rock chick, through punk, all the while, she's definitely got one platform boot firmly planted in the Goth genre. The series character has maintained that fashion savoir thanks to the help Pauley gets from friend, Clint Catalyst, who's there to advise on the Goth/punk/rock looks.
However, back to Abby and with that trademark spider's web tattoo on her neck, the raven-black, braided hair and the boots - which must make her incredibly tall - there's no denying that the 'Goth' theme runs through her wardrobe and when she wears the studded collar, well that just about does it. As for sleeping in a coffin? Well, I rest my case. |
